A federal judge in Texas awarded set-top box maker TiVo Inc an additional $103 million in damages plus interest on Tuesday in a long-running patent infringement dispute with DISH Network Corp and EchoStar Corp.

DirecTV is offering customers 33 movies via its on-demand service in 1080p high-definition format, the so-called "full HD" standard, which the satellite TV operator claimed is more than any other service.
Dish Network -- which has boasted of being "first" to offer 1080p content -- currently lists about 20 movies in the HD format through its own on-demand service.

Dish Network today said it would issue $104 million in damages to TiVo after the U.S. Supreme Court today refused to consider its appeal of a patent judgment. TiVo sued Dish Network in 2004 for DVR patent infringement and a Texas jury in April 2006 found in TiVo's favor.

At the beginning of this year, DISH network announced a goal to be able to offer customers 100 HD channels by the end of the year. They have done some fiddling with the numbers throughout the year; for example, in May they added 22 channels, issued a statement that they were near their goal with a total of 95 channels but then pulled 15 channels right away.

Most of them are variants of HBO or Starz, but they will bring the Dish total to more than 100. Perhaps more importantly, Dish has announced that it will begin selling packages of ONLY high-definition channels. If you don't want to pay for a bunch of fuzzy channels you never watch anyway, you won't have to.
