Sept. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. doubled sales of the Xbox 360 video game machine last weekend after cutting the price by as much as 29 percent to narrow Nintendo Co.'s lead.

Microsoft Corp. this week cited strong sales of the Xbox 360 video game console as a factor for record first-quarter revenue.
The company recorded $15.06 billion in revenue in the first quarter ending Sept. 30, 2008, a nine percent increase from the year prior.

The July NPD sales numbers have been released, and as always, Nintendo dominates in every way, while Microsoft and Sony battle it out for a distant second place. The industry continues to see large growth year over year, with a 35 percent jump in sales for the year to date, and an impressive 48 percent jump in software sales alone.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 fell in the latest retail data from Japan. Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the 360 sold 9,988 units between Dec. 1 and Dec. 7. By comparison, the hardware moved 11,423 units thee week prior.

Microsoft and Sony are still fighting it out for the scraps Nintendo leaves behind as it dominates the console sales figures. The Nintendo Wii is handily selling more consoles than the Xbox 360 and PS3 can move.
