The Criterion Collection has announced six titles for Blu-ray release in July. On July 12th, the independent studio will release Naked (Mike Leigh, 1993). A week later, it will release The Music Room (Satyajit Ray, 1958) and Beauty and the Beast (Jean Cocteau, 1946)

20th Century Fox Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has conceived a very special packaging for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition. Like the Alien Anthology released a few weeks ago, Avatar comes in a book-like packaging, but this is slightly different.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will officially hit the streets Oct. 20. The Michael Bay film, which earned over $820 million at the box office, will come in a two-disc Blu-ray set, as well as single-disc and two-disc standard-def DVD versions.

The holiday shopping season is at full intensity and consumers have made it clear that above all else they want a Blu-ray player in their stocking. Numerous reports have shown a dramatic increase in Blu-ray sales this year, with experts estimating that many more thousands of units will be cleared from the shelves before the New Year.

TiVo aren’t the only ones getting a streaming HD update: Samsung have released a firmware upgrade for their BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray players that enables high-definition streaming from on-demand partner Netflix. Version 2.1 also “improves playback compatibility” of some content.

Blu-ray became the standard for high-definition content when it defeated the HD DVD format in February. But Julie Johnston is stilHigh-def options vie with Blu-rayl on the fence about buying a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player. "Lately, there are so many ways to get" high-definition content that "it's not necessarily about just buying a DVD player anymore," says the graphic designer in Denver.
